The Dreamland amusement park opened in 1920, bringing holidaymakers and day-trippers to Margate. Many of Dreamland's big rides were dismantled in the 1990s with the park finally closing in 2003. From 2004 until 2006 Dreamland was to briefly reopen for three months every summer with most rides provided by a travelling fairground. A preservation group was founded to keep Margate's Dreamland as a working heritage theme park. Central to this plan is the restoration the UK's oldest wooden roller coaster.
